Teacher guide reSolve: Location - My Place in Space

TLF ID M025313

This series of two lessons explores locating points and calculating distances using the Cartesian plane. In the first lesson, students locate and describe points on the Cartesian plane using ordered pairs of coordinates. They then search for squares on a given plane and find the side lengths of the squares. In the second lesson, students find the vertical and horizontal distances between points on a Cartesian plane and use this to solve a problem of finding the best location for a depot for an ice cream delivery business. The sequence is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, presentation slides, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is very valuable for the year 6 mathematics content description about exploring the Cartesian coordinate system using all four quadrants. The lessons offer multiple opportunities for students to engage with the Cartesian plane, identifying locations using ordered pairs of coordinates, calculating distances and solving problems.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in solving a problem related to delivery distances for a depot and checking their calculations using efficient mental and written strategies.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
